Training with Built Green Canada

Online self-guided, affordable courses

We believe training is essential. All builder and renovator members must be trained in BUILT GREEN® practices, policies, and procedures prior to building their BUILT GREEN® projects. Contracted trades and/or suppliers are also encouraged to take our training, as are non-members interested in our programs.

BUILT GREEN® Program Fundamentals | Construction Technology for Built Green | Built Green Net Zero Energy for New Construction | Built Green Whole-House Energy Retrofit | More Training

BUILT GREEN® Program Fundamentals

$150 (plus tax) for members / $250 (plus tax) for non-members

A 15% discount is offered to companies that send more than five staff to our training. This course is a requirement for new builders and focuses on the fundamental aspects of the program to orient participants on how to work with Built Green; introduce them to the administrative and technical requirements; prepare them to successfully navigate our quality assurance processes; and offer resources to help them be successful at building BUILT GREEN® homes.

- 3 CPD Points through BC Housing

- Master Building training credits through Professional Home Builders Institute

Construction Technology for Built Green

$276.50 (plus tax) for BUILT GREEN® members* / $395 (plus tax) for non-members

This course places heavy emphasis on building science and building better and addresses the house as a system concept; the role of sustainable development in construction; how building science affects building durability and occupant comfort; the signs, symptoms, and solutions for good indoor air quality; building envelope details and how they control or contribute to heat, air, and moisture flows; and mechanical systems. In total, there are 14 online modules, each with a downloadable study guide to accompany the online learning program. This is offered through online training provider, Blue House Energy—a company committed to the delivery of online, on-demand courses in building science and energy efficiency for trades, renovators, contractors, and home performance professionals.

- 20 CPD Points through BC Housing

- Master Building training credits through Professional Home Builders Institute

Built Green Net Zero Energy for New Construction

$276.50 (plus tax) for BUILT GREEN® members* / $395 (plus tax) for non-members

This is a continuing education course, which introduces concepts and techniques for developing high performance and net zero energy new construction projects. In addition to advanced envelope and mechanical system content, the course includes discussion on how occupant behaviour impacts the overall energy use in a house, and affects the sizing of renewable energy systems.

The course has seven modules, each with a quiz that requires a 70% passing grade to proceed to the next module (there is no limit on quiz attempts).

- Describe the characteristics of net zero energy and high performance new construction

- Provide examples of envelope assemblies and systems that are suitable for net zero energy and high performance housing

- List advanced mechanical systems suitable for net zero energy construction

- Explain the impact of occupant behaviour on energy use and reaching net zero energy targets

- Discuss, at a high level, the properties and features of residential renewable energy systems

- 20 CPD Points through BC Housing

- Master Building training credits through Professional Home Builders Institute

Built Green Whole-House Energy Retrofit – NEW

$276.50 (plus tax) for BUILT GREEN® members* / $395 (plus tax) for non-members

This course builds on industry’s knowledge, providing the bigger picture of an “envelope-first” approach. It encompasses the basement to attic, assessing energy usage and building envelope, air leakage and drafts, insulation levels, heating / cooling problems, and how to identify and address dampness and mold or mildew, which could lead to structural and / or health problems.

Participants will gain an understanding of what a whole-house energy retrofit is, what it’s meant to achieve, what one needs to know when working in the industry, and what to look out for when installing energy efficiency measures in homes—including avoiding unintended consequences of tightening the building envelope.

Built Green Whole-House Energy Retrofit aligns with Natural Resources Canada’s EnerGuide for Houses Rating System and its envelope-first building science approach. The curriculum dovetails with Built Green’s Renovation programs that include energy efficiency as a key focus and goes on to other critical aspects of sustainable building—like materials and methods, water conservation, and waste management. This aligns with our Renovation Program, which will be reintroduced later this year.

More Training

One of the requirements for builder membership is that training is taken every two years. We strongly recommend building science training as a natural progression, and to encourage continued education, points may be earned on our checklist for doing so. We recognize Building Science for New Homes training available through Service Organizations licensed through Natural Resources Canada; however, when accessibility is a challenge, there are other options.

The organization offers programs for Single Family (including Net Zero Energy+), Single Family Renovations, High Density (including multi-storey, residential tower, and mixed-use), High Density Renovations, Communities, and Restorations with Small Commercial in pilot.
