The Built Green™ Multi-Storey and Residential Tower (MS&RT) Program

In Fall 2005, Built Green Canada was approached by Assured Developments Ltd. of Calgary about labeling a multi-storey stacked townhome project. Later in April 2006, Centron Group of Companies, on behalf on Homburg-Centron Teamworks approached Built Green Canada about including residential towers in the Built Green™ program. At the same time, Adera Projects Ltd. had been working on a Built Green™ townhome project and wanted to use one program that included their stacked and non-stacked building types. Meanwhile, Christenson Developments had been working on a project in Strathcona County and had already done significant work on multi-storey buildings. In October 2006, an official Built Green™ Multi-Storey and Residential Tower Pilot was initiated in response to the industry interest.

At that time, 5 builders in Calgary, Canmore, Edmonton, and North Vancouver elected to participate in the Pilot program. Since then, other builders, developers, and municipalities have been introduced to the Built Green™ Multi-Storey and Residential Tower Pilot and have begun to design and/or create incentives to encourage Built Green™ Multi-Storey and Residential Tower projects.

Frequently Asked Questions:
  1. What is the cost to go to the Built Green™ Gold from standard?

This is difficult to answer as it depends on what standard is. Thus far we hear costs in the 2-10% range.

  2. Is there any assistance available for Built Green™ MS&RT EE4 projects?

Natural Resources Canada will continue to provide technical support for modelling (training and 1 days worth of modelling advice per design) and 3rd party validation of EE4 models.  This information is on their web site although the extent of the support may not be immediately evident.

NRCan can also provide technical support for integrated design charrettes with two documents that they helped co-fund; the Value in Process document and the IDP Roadmap. The first document is an expanded and integrated design process. The second document is the IDP Roadmap, a comprehensive guide to IDP.  They can forward copies to interested parties.
