Builder Requirements
Successful completion of the Built Green™
Builder Training is required to become a Built Green™ Certified Builder member. (A passing grade is 75%.) Since the
R-2000 builder training curriculum is the foundation of the Built Green™ Builder Training, successful completion will also classify the builder as an "R-2000 Trained Builder", eligible to build an R-2000 demonstration home.
We recommend that the person(s) attending the workshop should have the authority to negotiate changes with the client, supervise the purchase of materials and equipment, and oversee the work of the trades involved in construction. Built Green™ Builder "Update" Training must be attended every two years to continue to be a Certified Builder.
When a builder enrolls in the program they are not required to build every home to meet the program's criteria, rather, they may choose to participate at whatever level best suits their market. However, every home registered with the program must meet the program's criteria. Only those homes that have been registered in the program and have successfully met the program criteria will receive Built Green™ certification.
Because of the range and number of options available under the Built Green™ Checklist (available at our
front page) every builder may build "green" somewhat differently. The program provides a range of technical support and training opportunities to assist builders in making their Checklist choices as well as follow up support.
THE “HOW TO” OF BUILT GREEN™
A step-by-step process from membership to home labeling
In order to become a Built Green Canada member, a company must be a member of a participating Home Builders’ Association. Builders must successfully complete Builder Training to become a “certified” builder in order to enroll their homes. Here is an overview of the process:
A) BECOMING A BUILT GREEN CANADA MEMBER
1. From www.builtgreencanada.ca click on “apply for membership”.
2. Click on the dropdown menu for membership type, insert your information, click on register.
3. Your membership application will go to the HBA that you are a member of for approval. Once approved, an automatic email will be sent (only to builder members) with a username and a temporary password for access to the Built Green Canada database.
B) TRAINING
4. From www.builtgreencanada.ca, click on “register for training”.
5. Click on the dropdown menu to select your company, use the next dropdown menus to choose the course you want (Builder Training or Plan Evaluation Training), complete the required fields, click on submit. To set up custom courses call 403.210.4380. You will be notified of course details by email.
6. Attend and successfully complete the training.
C) ENROLLING HOMES (Builders Only)
7. Develop Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum level specs from the Built Green™ Checklist and complete energy modeling files for those home plans that will be enrolled. You can hire an approved Certified Energy Advisor (CEA) to do this. (See website for contact information.)
8. From www.builtgreencanada.ca, click on “Member Login” to access the Built Green database (use the ID and password that was emailed to you when your membership was approved), click on “start new”, complete the required fields and upload your files (Home Enrollment, Checklist and P & N files).
-
If you don’t want to submit the project immediately, click on “save”, OR
-
If you’re ready to submit the project to your HBA for approval, click on “file”.
9. Once your HBA approves the project, it will then go to the CEA “to do” list and wait for you to request a blower door test (prior to homebuyer possession).
10. Once the blower door test is completed, the CEA will upload their files with the results and the project will go to the provincial service organization for quality assurance.
11. The project will then go back to your “to do” list for final sign off. When you sign off on a project, it signifies that you are satisfied with the results (air changes per hour, depressurization and EnerGuide rating). If the results aren’t rejected by you, the project will return to the CEA for re-evaluation and will go through to you for sign off again. The project will be submitted to NRCan by the provincial service organization for additional quality assurance.
12. (Projects rejected by NRCan must be adjusted and re-submitted to NRCan.)Projects approved by NRCan will receive an EnerGuide label and report issued by the service organization and the appropriate Built Green™ sticker (bronze, silver, gold or platinum) given by the Built Green™ Society. The Built Green™ sticker is placed directly on the EnerGuide Label and sent directly to the builder.
How soon can I start building a Built Green™ registered home? You can start building under the program as soon as you become a member of Built Green Canada. Hire a consultant to conduct the plan evaluation(s). Register the home. Take the Built Green™ Builder Training while you are building and successfully complete the training by possession.
