Guiding Principles

The Built Green™ Program is founded on a set of principals guiding overall direction including:

The program is voluntary; The program is to help foster initiative and creativity. Participation in the program is not mandatory to participating HBA members; it is an opportunity.

Training is integral to the qualification component of the Built Green™ program; it is mandatory that participating builders successfully complete the required training before they build homes (or during construction) to be registered in the Built Green™ program. Built Green Canada will provide seminars as required for members to ensure that best practices are maintained and are current with new technology as the program progresses.

Flexibility and affordability; The program offers four levels of achievement which builders and consumers can choose from based on the number of items selected from the Built Green™ Checklist. Bronze is the minimum achievement level required to be considered a certified Built Green™ home.

Not cost prohibitive; The range of choices allows the consumer and builder to choose based on a combination of financial, health and environmental concerns.

Program Integrity; To verify the energy efficiency, a blower door test is conducted by a trained and licensed third-party consultant (a Certified Energy Advisor) just prior to possession. To confirm selected checklist items are being included in the homes, 5% of the builders registered homes will be audited at random during different phases of construction. Only those homes registered in the program that successfully achieve the program criteria may receive the Built Green™ designation.
